BIOGRAPHY:
Dr. Hazem Aqel is a professor in Medical Microbiology at King Saud Bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences. He obtained his B.Sc. degree in Medical Laboratory Technology from Kuwait University/Kuwait, his M.Sc. degree in General and Medical Microbiology from University College London/UK, and his Ph.D. in Microbiology from Birmingham University/UK. He has pioneered structural studies of isolation and characterization of thermophilic bacteria and bacteriophages, bacterial enzymatic activities, antimicrobial plant extractions, and understanding pathogenicity, latency and reactivation of viruses. His current researches are in viral infection and antibiotics resistance.
Dr. Hazem Aqel is interested in understanding pathogenicity, latency and reactivation of viruses in their host to produce vaccine. He is also interested in how bacterial cells respond to the environment by altering which protein they synthesize and in how bacteria detect and respond to stressful conditions and to the presence of antibiotics.
